Faith

Not a feeling. Not optimism. Not belief without evidence. The question is not whether you trust — it is whether your trust moves you.

Faith, in the tradition from which it is drawn, was never a synonym for hope or sentiment. The Greek πίστις and the Hebrew אֱמוּנָה converge on one operational idea: reliable action based on demonstrated trustworthiness. A bridge engineer who walks across his own structure is exercising faith. A man who claims to trust the bridge but will not cross it is exercising nothing.

The small words carry the weight. All things were made by him — or through him? One says he did the making. One says he was how it got done.

English translations collapse dozens of distinct Greek prepositions into a handful of common words — by, through, in, from, of. Each original word points a different direction, and the direction is the whole message. Out of something is not the same as through something, and neither one is the same as under somebody. When that direction is lost in translation, a verse about who did the making can quietly start saying somebody else did it — and a verse about where faith comes from can start pointing at your own effort instead of God’s. Nothing is added and nothing is removed. One small word is swapped for a near neighbor, and the sentence quietly changes hands.
